India’s participation at the Olympics goes back to 1900, Paris Olympics. Norman Pritchard who became the first athlete to qualify in Olympics from India. Norman won two silvers at the Paris Olympic games in athletics and made India the first Asian country to win an Olympic Medal. After that came the golden era of Indian Hockey from 1928 Amsterdam to 1964 Tokyo, when India won 7 Olympic golds one after another, while last gold was won in 1980 in Moscow.
2016 might bring a new era of Indian success in Olympic games. India is going to send largest ever delegation of athletes in the history of summer Olympics. As 120 athletes have already qualified for the games in 15 different sports.

Indian women archers for Olympics
Three female archers Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi, Laxmirani Majhi and one male archer Atanu Das have qualified for India in Rio after having secured top eight finish in the women’s team re-curve event. Atanu Das has secured a place among men’s individual event although men’s team could not qualify.

Gymnastics
India has qualified one artistic gymnast into the Olympic competition for the first time since 1964. Dipa Karmakar became the first Indian female ever to book an Olympic spot in the apparatus and all-around events.
Judo
India has qualified one judoka for men’s middleweight category (90 kg) for the olympic. Avtar Singh earned a continental quota from the Asian region, as the highest-ranked Indian judoka outside of direct qualifying position in the IJF World Ranking List of 30 May 2016.
Rowing
India has qualified one boat in the men’s single sculls for the Olympics at the 2016 Asia & Oceania Continental Qualification Regatta Dattu Baban Bhokanal.
Shooting
Indian shooters have achieved quota places for the following events by virtue of their best finish at the 2014 and 2015 ISSF World Championships, the 2015 ISSF World Cup series and Asian Championships, as long as they obtained a minimum qualifying score (MQS) by 31 March 2016.[21]
On 19 March 2016, National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) had announced the squad of eleven Indian shooters for the Games, featuring four-time Olympian and Beijing 2008 air rifle champion Abhinav Bindra, London 2012 bronze medalist Gagan Narang, and multiple-time Worlds medalist Jitu Rai.
